The Xerox logo evolution

The original logo for Xerox (after the company had dropped its “Haloid” half) was designed by Lippincott in 1961. Seven years later Chermayeff & Geismar updated the wordmark.

In 1994 Landor changed the logo to red and the digitized X was introduced.

When “The Document Company” appeared, employees answered the phone by saying “The Document Company, Xerox”. In 2002, the wordmark became the more prominent visual. Later, in 2004, “The Document Company” disappeared.

The new Xerox logo (designed by Interbrand) is now a lowercase treatment of the Xerox name — in a vibrant red — alongside a sphere-shaped symbol sketched with lines that link to form an illustrative “X,” representing Xerox’s connections to its customers, partners, industry and innovation, and designed to be more effectively animated for use in multi-media platforms.

New Xerox logo, transforming an iconic brand

The Xerox wordmark was in serious need of an update and this new wordmark does an amazing job. A wise move would have been to simply move forward with the wordmark, placing emphasis and importance on the word Xerox, which has plenty of equity. But instead we also had to be graced with the introduction of a new symbol…

The new ‘web2.0ish’ Xerox symbol got some positive reactions, but mainly has antagonists, calling it: “abominable and meaningless”, “a furious marble”, “an X-Men costume on a cough drop”, “a stupid fake 3D web button”,…

The logo-redesign was done by Interbrand and this is their official project description: Signaling a clear change and evoking a dramatic shift in the world’s perception of this iconic brand, the visual and verbal identity system for Xerox has undergone a massive redesign. The new signature incorporates a lowercase treatment of the Xerox name — in a vivid red Pantone 1797 — alongside a sphere sketched with lines, called “connectors,” that link to form an “X”, representing the company’s connections to its customers, employees, partners, industry and innovation. The “connectors” are super-graphics that appear as reoccurring design elements.

Olympic logo

2008 Beijing

The 2008 Beijing Olympic logo, named the “Dancing Beijing”, is an artistic representation of Beijing’s hospitality, hopes and commitment to the Olympic Games and the world. It signifies the message of love, luck, beauty, commitment, and spirit and invites the world to be a part of the world’s most celebrated event: the Olympics. At first, you see a simply drawn running man, but after careful observation, the image in the Beijing Olympic logo is a vague calligraphy of a Chinese word (Jing). Plus, the red color of the logo signifies the traditional Chinese values and the stone shape gives the logo an ancient feel to it.

It is a good design, its creative and distinctive, the typeface is attractive, and the image is relevant too.

2012 London

The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, comes in a series of shades of pink, blue, green and orange and will evolve in the run-up to the Games. It’s supposed to be the numbers, 2012, designed to appeal to today’s internet generation. This London 2012 Olympic logo, designed by Wolff Ollins, caused outrage amongst the general public and media community. Was this a master stroke by Wolff Ollins who realised, that in modern society, sometimes the only thing that will truly reach the youth market is controversy? By provoking a reaction from their target segment, they have already managed to generate more interest than any multi-million pound endorsement or media campaign could hope to achieve. It is hard to deny that the new Logo seems to have awakened a pride amongst the public, showing that people do care about this country’s
